High School Students Grant Funds to Nonprofits
Greater Cleveland high school students made some smart decisions in giving grants to nonprofit agencies this year, as United Way of Greater Cleveland's John K. Mott Youth Fund Distribution Committee (YFDC) awarded $50,000 in grants to 11 deserving agencies on May 27, 2009 at United Way's downtown headquarters.
This year, thirty-five students from 20 high schools served on the YFDC. The grants fund programs specifically focused on children and youths, including nutrition, sports, education, health care and counseling.
The YFDC gives high school juniors and seniors a unique chance to be part of the decision-making process to make their community a better place for young people through grantmaking to select projects.
John K. Mott Youth Fund Grant Recipients for 2009 are:
- Beech Brook - Passages to Independence
- Cleveland Christian Home - Girls Circle Summer Program
- Cleveland Foodbank - Children’s Nutrition Initiative
- Kidney Foundation of Ohio, Inc. - Healthy Teens, Healthy Tomorrow
- Junior Achievement of Greater Cleveland - Economics for Success
- Matthew’s Lending Library - Voices
- St. Malachi Center - Transitions
- Shoes and Clothes for Kids - Buying and Distribution Program
- Spanish American Committee - Adelante Service (Moving Forward)
- Transitional Housing, Inc. - Family Development Program
- West Side Ecumenical Ministry - El Barrio Youth Employment Services (YES) Program
Applications for youth interested in serving on the 2009-2010 John K. Mott Youth Fund Distribution Committee will be accepted through September 25. If you know a high school junior or senior that you think would be interested in participating in the YFDC, please contact Justine Reeves at 216-436-2227 or jreeves@uws.org. A downloadable application will be available on the United Way Web site by the end of August.
Applications for funding will be accepted starting in December 2009. Each year the YFDC group determines the funding priorities and sends out a Request for Proposal (RFP). If you know of an agency that might be eligible for YFDC funding, please contact Justine Reeves (see above) and ask to be put on the RFP mailing list.
