High School Students Grant Funds to Nonprofits
Greater Cleveland high school students made some smart decisions in giving grants to nonprofit agencies this year, as United Way of Greater Cleveland's John K. Mott Youth Fund Distribution Committee (YFDC) awarded $50,000 in grants to 11 deserving agencies on May 28 at United Way's downtown headquarters.
This year, thirty-five students from 14 high schools served on the 2008 YFDC. The grants fund programs specifically focused on children and youths, including nutrition, sports, education, health care and counseling.
The YFDC gives high school juniors and seniors a unique chance to be part of the decision-making process to make their community a better place for young people through grantmaking to select projects.
John K. Mott Youth Fund Grant Recipients for 2008 are:
- All Sports Academy - The Skills and Talent Under Development Program
- Cleveland Foodbank - Children's Nutrition Initiative
- Cleveland Rape Crisis Center - Therapeutic Services for Child, Adolescent & Teen Survivors of Sexual Abuse
- Domestic Violence Center - Shelter Youth Program
- Hard Hatted Women - Rosie's Girls
- Kidney Foundation of Ohio - Healthy Teens, Healthy Tomorrow
- Matthew's Lending Library - Rub-A-Dub Safety for All in the Tub
- Recovery Resources - Mommy and Me

Applications for youths interested in serving on the 2009 John K. Mott Youth Fund Distribution Committee are being accepted through September 24. If you know a high school student that you think would be interested in participating in the YFDC, please contact Justine Reeves at 216-436-2227 or jreeves@uws.org. A downloadable application will be available on the United Way Web site by the end of August.
Applications for funding will be accepted starting in December 2008. Each year the YFDC group determines the funding priorities and sends out a Request for Proposal (RFP). If you know of an agency that might be eligible for YFDC funding, please contact Justine Reeves (see above) and ask to be put on the RFP mailing list.
