January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month
Approximately two out of every 100 people over the age of 40 have glaucoma. At least half of those do not know they have it because glaucoma usually has no symptoms until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. Glaucoma has several forms, and because it can strike anyone, everyone should have their eyes checked regularly. Learn more about glaucoma.
Cold and Flu Season is Upon Us
A high percentage of the Greater Cleveland population is suffering from cold and flu-like symptoms and these levels will most likely peak over the next couple of months. Doing simple things like washing your hands frequently, covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing, cleaning your work area and increasing your fluid intake will help you stay healthy. Diabetes: Are You at Risk?
Did you know that 1 in 16 people in northeast Ohio have diabetes and many don't even know it? Learn the risk factors and symptoms associated with this disease. If caught early, many of the complications from diabetes can be stopped or even reversed. November is national diabetes awareness month. Learn more about diabetes and United Way partner agency the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland, then take some time to get a free diabetes risk assessment.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is in its 21st year of educating women about the importance of early detection. More and more women are getting mammograms to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. As a result, deaths
due to breast cancer are on the decline. Encourage the women in your life to
get mammograms on a regular basis. This year, National Mammography Day will be celebrated on October 21.

September is Healthy Aging Month
Focusing on the positive side of aging
Healthy Aging Month promotes the positive aspects of aging and is designed to increase knowledge
about new treatments, promote awareness of healthy lifestyles and expand the contributions of older
persons to families and communities. Learn more about the four keys to healthy aging: physical fitness,
social wellness, financial fitness and mental wellness.
Physical fitness:
- Take a look at the National Institute of Health's Exercise for Seniors
- Choose an exercise that you like and stick with it
- Engage in 30 minutes of aerobic exercise and weight-bearing exercise every day
Social wellness:
- Contribute time to your community through local volunteer groups, religious organizations, or civic groups
- Senior volunteer and employment opportunities are available through United Way's partner agency, RSVP, and SeniorsConnect.org
- Stay in close contact with friends and family. Write, email, or call someone daily
Financial fitness:
- Save at least 10% of your income and invest in savings plans that compound interest
- Establish financial goals, stick to a planned budget, sign up for a retirement plan

Mental wellness:
- Keep your mind exercised, too, by reading, learning a new skill, and researching something that interests you
- Develop a hobby -- it's never too late to learn how to play the piano!

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), which strives to increase awareness about immunization across the lifespan as parents and children prepare for the return to school and the medical community begins preparations for the upcoming flu season. Make sure your child is up-to-date on vaccinations by visiting the link below. And keep in mind that United Way's 211/First Call For Help can help those without health insurance find clinics offering free or low cost services.

April is Cancer Control Month
