Becoming a Nonprofit
To become a nonprofit agency, an organization must register with the Internal Revenue Service for tax purposes. This section of the law is commonly referred to as 501(c)(3), which in turn is often synonymous with nonprofit.
According to the Internal Revenue Service, there were almost 700,000 nonprofits in the United States in 1997. The number is up 64% in just 10 years!
