United Way raises $40,548,061 to Support
Health and Human Services in our Community

      March 6, 2009 (Cleveland, Ohio)

The 2008 United Way of Greater Cleveland Campaign raised $40,548,061 to support health and human services and help over 400,000 Greater Cleveland residents this year. Campaign Co-Chairs Marc S. Byrnes, Oswald Companies Chairman and CEO, and Christopher M. Connor, The Sherwin-Williams Company Chairman and CEO, announced the campaign result at United Way's Annual Meeting March 6 at the Renaissance Cleveland Hotel. More than 1,000 people attended the meeting and nearly 100,000 donors supported the campaign.

Sandra Pianalto, United Way of Greater Cleveland Board Chairman and Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland President and CEO, commended the Campaign Co-Chairs on a job well done. "On behalf of Greater Cleveland residents who are helped by United Way-funded services, your work is greatly appreciated," she said. Pianalto also commented on the new strategic funding direction United Way implemented in the past year. "The redefining of our investment strategies has come at a very good time. This new direction effectively targets many of our community's health and human service issues by funding more than 200 programs through 105 United Way partner agencies and 21 newly funded agencies," she said.

Byrnes and Connor praised their campaign team members who raised more than $40 million in this challenging economic time as well as the generosity of Greater Cleveland residents. "We have witnessed extraordinary generosity. We saw people reach deep, deep into their pockets because they know our community is hurting," said Connor. "We are grateful to every donor who contributed to this campaign," said Byrnes.

Among the largest workplace campaigns in 2008, four raised over $1 million: KeyCorp ($3.2 million), Cleveland Clinic Health System ($1.82 million), National City now a part of PNC ($1.75 million) and Eaton Corporation ($1.7 million).

The annual meeting was also a time to recognize volunteers who had contributed their time and talents to United Way throughout the year. Dennis Chack, Illuminating Company Regional President, was named Volunteer of the Year for his tireless service to the community through United Way. In addition, Jim Petsock, UPS Human Resources Manager - Central Ohio District, was recognized with a Community Partner award for his extraordinary volunteer service.

Charles A. Ratner, Community Vision Council Co-Chair and Forest City Enterprises, Inc. President and CEO, reported on Community Vision Council activities. He spoke on the progress of several developing initiatives, including the Comprehensive Clinical Data Sharing Network, Promoting Family Behavioral Health in the Prison Re-Entry Population and Benefits Enrollment and Access for seniors.

City of Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson congratulated the Campaign Co-Chairs Byrnes and Connor and their team for their contribution to our community through their United Way work.

Cuyahoga County Commissioners President Timothy Hagan commented on the collaboration between the County Commissioners and United Way that benefits Greater Cleveland residents including their support of 211/First Call For Help and Community Vision Council projects.

The meeting concluded with the introduction of the 2009 Campaign Co-Chairs, David Hooker, Thompson Hine LLP Managing Partner, and Patrick Mullin, Deloitte Managing Partner. Hooker asked audience members for their continued support in the upcoming campaign.
