United Way Agency Profile: Merrick House
Settlement houses were among the original charities to be part of the Community Chest, the predecessor to United Way. Today, settlement houses and neighborhood centers continue to be important parts of the United Way family of partner agencies, with over $1.7 million invested in support of neighborhood center projects in 2005. These centers continue to provide vital social and recreational services to communities throughout Greater Cleveland.
Merrick House is one of the oldest settlement houses and neighborhood centers in Greater Cleveland and it has been in continuous operation since 1919. Merrick House continues its role at the center of life in the Stockyards, Tremont, Clark/Fulton and Archwood/Denison neighborhoods in Cleveland. Today, Merrick House has three locations, including Starkweather Avenue, Merrick House West on Fulton Road and a Before and After School Care Center on West 14th Street.
"Empowering residents, helping them to become self-sufficient and providing community leadership when facing challenging community wide issues is what we strive to do at Merrick" Gail Long, Executive Director of Merrick House says. Ms. Long will be retiring this year after 29 years of outstanding service to the community. "During the time I have been with Merrick House so much has changed. We have added and expanded services such as updating day care and senior services so that we are meeting the needs of this changing, diverse and dynamic community."
Over time, the functions of neighborhood centers have evolved, and United Way is there to help these important centers for community activities and support services meet those needs throughout Greater Cleveland's communities.
Today Merrick House, including two satellite facilities, provides a wide variety of social programs, from day care and youth recreation activities to programs and case managers that help seniors remain socially engaged and independent. GED preparation courses, child nutrition assistance, outreach to parents and families, health screenings, volunteer activities and hosting special community events such as the Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival are just a few of the multitude of activities Merrick House supports throughout the neighborhood, all year long.
