New Agency Joins the United Way Partnership
    Magnolia Clubhouse

Magnolia: A street in University Circle.
Clubhouse: A "clubhouse" is a program of psychosocial rehabilitation and reintegration based on the International Center for Clubhouse Development Model developed in New York City. The first "clubhouse development" was opened in 1948. Today there are over 400 clubhouses across the world.

Magnolia Clubhouse, United Way's newest community partner, is the only "clubhouse development" in Ohio. It promotes vocational, educational, social and personal achievements through a fully integrated program of learning, working and socializing for people who experience serious and prolonged mental illness. Established in 1961, Magnolia Clubhouse (which was known until 2000 as Hill House) has helped over 4,000 of people since it's founding.

Lori D'Angelo, PhD, Magnolia Clubhouse Director, says that the clubhouse model is unique and effective. "We serve about 80 people each day and have over 240 members this year. The programs and structure we provide really make a difference in members' lives."

Previously a member of the Bridgeway Inc, which is a network of mental health and recovery services based in Cleveland, Magnolia Clubhouse is now an independent agency. The clubhouse is located in University Circle (next to the Cleveland Music School Settlement) and has been an independent organization since 2004.

Magnolia House provides a variety of services for members. For a dollar a day (the actual cost is about $40), members get transitional employment placement, a place to socialize, receive lunch each day and can get a discount bus pass. The club produces a newsletter; has its own art and television studios; provides a variety of social, recreational and educational activities and support services, all of which are available to members. Membership is open to anyone wanting help and many volunteer opportunities are available.

Employment is extremely important for people who have a mental illness and want to begin or return to productive work lives. Clubhouse members are four times more likely to work than those with mental illness who are not.

Many companies in the Greater Cleveland area have partnered with Magnolia Clubhouse, including Zagara's Food Center, The Cleveland Zoological Society, Geauga Lake and Starbucks. Members of the clubhouse have a variety of valued skills and abilities. They work as administrative assistants, grocery baggers, messengers, mailroom workers, receptionist/greeters, foodservice workers and stock clerks to name a few of the positions members hold.

If you would like to volunteer at the clubhouse, contribute to Bloomin', the clubhouse thrift store, hire members of the clubhouse or know someone who might want to join, please call Lori D'Angelo at 216-721-3030 x133 or visit there website by clicking here.

By supporting United Way, you support the clubhouse.

For all that you do to enhance the quality of life, health and education of families in Greater Cleveland, thank you!
