United Way Helps Greater Clevelanders in Need
Henry Meyer III, Chairman of United Way's 2005 campaign reminded the crowd on Public Square on September 1 about what makes this country great and this city strong: it is people and our individual capacity to consider the needs of others, particularly the most vulnerable in our community.

He said "Too many people in our great community will NOT go to bed in a place they call home…too many people in our great city will NOT have an evening meal and too many of our neighbors will NOT have a job to go to. We have the ability to change those facts for the better through United Way of Greater Cleveland."

He spoke of the value of community and the potential for change and growth when we come together, united in our goals and objectives. "United Way is the most efficient and effective way to impact our community for a better tomorrow."

Mr. Meyer announced this year's campaign goal of $43.5 million dollars at 8 a.m. The needs in our community have been growing quickly, far outstripping the ability of the programs United Way funds to serve those who are in need. We must be there to help our friends, neighbors and those who live around us. We have the capacity within us to increase hope and opportunity for those who have too little of either.

From 7-10:30 a.m. Mr. Meyer pitched in and joined our region's civic leaders, media personalities and celebrities in flipping a record number of pancakes in the annual United Way Pancake Flip. Over 7,500 pancakes were made. In addition to an enormous amount of pancakes, 5,000 sausages, 300 gallons of coffee and orange juice were served up during the pancake flip.

"When every major media outlet and leaders from both the business and nonprofit communities come together for one cause it is because the need is so great and the cause so important. It bands people together, and when people come together, amazing things happen. These incredible volunteers make incredible things happen, and for that I am so grateful." Michael Benz, President and CEO of United Way of Greater Cleveland, says. United Way is the largest private funder of health and human service programs in Greater Cleveland.

Our thanks to The Renaissance Cleveland Hotel and Northern Haserot for their donation of food and supplies that made this campaign kickoff a flippin' success!
