The lives you touch
Stories of how United Way funding affects lives and improves our community.

Health and caring for all
In 2005, nearly 12,000 Northeast Ohio individuals received testing and counseling from the American Sickle Cell Anemia Association, a United Way partner agency, with more than 1,500 babies testing positive for the sickle cell disease or trait. This is just one of 16 programs in United Way's health and medical supportive services cluster area that is helped by your contribution to United Way's general fund. Your gift also goes toward programming in the areas of rehabilitation and related specialized treatment as well as programs that provide treatment, education and prevention of substance abuse. United Way invested $4,102,480 last year in these critical programs, ensuring that Greater Clevelanders get the assistance they need to live longer, happier and healthier lives.

Senior success
Getting older brings wisdom, respect and experience. It shouldn't bring hunger and loneliness. United Way funding provides nearly 800,000 nutritious meals for seniors each year, and for many homebound seniors, the only human contact all day comes with the meal. The Golden Age Centers of Greater Cleveland, a United Way partner agency, has 16 locations around town, providing a lifeline for thousands of seniors who rely on them for social, educational, recreational and supportive services all year long. Your gift to United Way helps to fund programs focused on senior success, including adult day care, home-delivered meals and senior centers, making Greater Cleveland a place where seniors can find the success, contentment and respect they deserve.

Strong families = successful children
One in five people struggle with some form of mental illness. Often, no outward signs exist, but for those afflicted and their families, the pain can be crippling. United Way funded mental health services that helped 18,024 people in 2005. One of the 15 United Way partner agencies that provide mental health services in our community is Magnolia Clubhouse. The Clubhouse promotes vocational, educational, social and personal achievement for people who experience serious and prolonged mental illness. In addition to mental health counseling, your gift to United Way helps to provide funding for programs providing services in the areas of basic needs, child and family services and youth development. Thanks to your support, United Way is able to make a difference in our community, one person at a time.

Learning and earning for life
The West Side Community House is at the heart of the Ohio City neighborhood in Cleveland. It is one of 20 United Way programs that provided a safe place for 6,755 children through childcare and before- and after-school programs last year. Because of your contribution to United Way, these children have a better start in life. This is part of United Way's commitment to creating caring, positive learning environments for children throughout our community. Through these effective programs, United Way makes an investment not only in individuals but the entire community's future.
