Making our Community Better, One Person at a Time

PatrinaMarried with three children, Patrina Nickson needed help preparing for her next career move, and Towards Employment, a United Way partner agency, gave her the assistance and support she needed.

After graduating from college, Patrina worked as a security guard at Indian Hills Senior Center and then worked as a resident assistant at the Rosemary Center for Mental Retardation. The center, however, cut back on its staffing needs and Patrina found herself without a job and without the income needed to support her family.

While at the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services, Patrina was told about Towards Employment. Soon after beginning to work with Towards Employment doors opened up for her. "Jamie Brown, my case worker at Towards Employment really helped me out by teaching me how to pursue a job… and a career. I learned how to prepare a resume that really stood out. They helped me make connections to employers who needed someone with my skills and before going out on real interviews, they made sure I was prepared by conducting mock interviews with me so I could be the best I could be," she said.

Patrina soon landed a job...and a new career working as a case manager at Hitchcock Center for Women. She is now in a position that is meaningful and fulfilling, is receiving continuing training to enhance her skills and she found a mentor that is guiding her and helping her manage her career. Patrina says, "Towards Employment opened opportunities for me and made it possible for me to do work I really enjoy. I have also been able to give back to the community, to the organizations that gave me the chance to help me help myself. That's United Way and Towards Employment."

Patrina has now been with Hitchcock Center for two years, and for two years she has been there for others who need help by contributing to United Way's annual campaign.

Providing opportunity. Leading community partnerships. Finding solutions to Greater Cleveland's health and human service priorities. That's what United Way is about, and with your help, we will make this community a better place, one person at a time.
