Lighted Schoolhouse receives Vision Council support
The Strong families=successful children Community Vision Council has allocated $100,000 to support the Lighted Schoolhouse pilot at Daniel E. Morgan Elementary School that began Feb. 14, 2005.
The Lighted Schoolhouse is a strategy to keep school buildings open for after-school programs for students, parents and community members. This initiative addresses two Vision Council priorities, after-school programming and fuller use of our schools. The after-school program component provides a safe, educational environment for youths during the hours of 2 to 5 pm, when many youngsters are home unsupervised while their parents work. The adult programs will offer education and employment preparation as well as activities for seniors.
In addition to Vision Council funding, community support for Lighted Schoolhouse comes from the Empowerment Zone for the Adult education and employment component and the Cuyahoga County Commissioners through their Family and Children First Council for the youth programs. The Lighted Schoolhouse initiative represents collaboration between the Mayor's Office, City of Cleveland, the Cleveland Municipal School District, the County Commissioners, Family and Children First Council and Daniel E. Morgan Elementary School.
The lead agency to administer the adult employment readiness and training programs is the Urban League of Greater Cleveland. They serve as site manager and will coordinate programming that will be provided by the City Department of Aging, City Department of Consumer Affairs and the City Department of Public Health.
The lead agency for the youth programs is the Urban Minority Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Outreach Program. They will provide a diverse blend of social programs to youngsters from 2 to 5 pm on school days.
Additionally, Bellefaire JCB will provide behavioral health services.
Vision Council allocated $90,000 to support the summer and fall youth programs and $10,000 to study the program to assure effectiveness before allocating additional funds.
