    How United Way Cares
    How United Way Investment Clusters are Organized, Last in a Series: Capacity Building

    Capacity Building is perhaps the least understood but one of the most important of the five investment committees that make up how United Way makes our community a better place. Unlike the other four community investment committees, Capacity Building does not support programs focused on improving individual lives, but enhances our community's overall capacity to care.

    Among the programs that receive support and oversight from the Capacity Building investment committee are those concerned with information referral, organizational development, planning, research, advocacy and volunteer development. Organizations that administer these United Way funded programs are among the most innovative and well respected in their fields, both regionally and nationally, some with ties to United Way going back 50 years or more. American Red Cross, Catholic Charities, The Center for Community Solutions, United Black Fund, Neighborhood Centers Association and the Jewish Community Federation are a few of these organizations.

    Advocacy is among the most exciting programmatic areas of the Capacity Building investment committee. One advocacy program is administered by Voices for Children. Part of a national coalition, Voices for Children advocates and encourages support for policies, standards and programs that enhance the quality of life for children and their families in local, state and federal government programs. Examples of areas where their advocacy has impacted children are:
    • Encouraging support for early childhood education (0-6 years old);
    • Enhancing the safety of schools and neighborhoods for children and
    • Universal access to physical and behavioral health services for children and their families.

    United Way supports their mission and the work of this important coalition.

    As co-chair of the Community Investment Committee, Bill Joseph has seen how non-profit organizations have benefited from United Way capacity building efforts. "Through the support and encouragement of the capacity building committee, many United Way partner agencies have learned how to be more efficient, collaborate with other organizations, increase the strength of their leadership as well as become effective advocates for their causes. We help them become advocates for their organizations on the local, state and national level, gaining them the recognition and support they deserve. Through the investments of United Way, critical health and human service organizations in our community are empowered to do more and enhance the impact they have in Greater Cleveland," Mr. Joseph says.

    No matter what their focus, United Way increases the ability of health and human service organizations to do more and to increase their community impact, making our community a better place to live for all of us.
