How United Way Cares
How United Way Investment Clusters are Organized, Fifth in a Series: Senior Success
Senior success is one of the five investment committees that United Way of Greater Cleveland supports. United Way is a collaborator and partner with other government and non-governmental programs in Greater Cleveland and as such is an effective catalyst that promotes innovation and high quality programs for seniors.
Most of us take for granted the ability to drive, to work or to take care of our own basic needs. Yet many seniors cannot complete these activities, creating difficulties for seniors who wish to remain independent, vital members of the community. The mission of Senior Success is to keep seniors active and help them to lead fulfilling lives as long as possible as well as make transitions easier when additional help is needed.
Each investment committee is composed of clusters of programs, and so is the Senior Success Investment Committee. The two clusters that compose the Senior Success Committee are Senior Centers and the Basic Subsistence/Supportive Services Clusters. Each cluster focuses on programs administered by different United Way partner agencies, each with different missions. The Senior Success Investment Committee and its clusters, like all United Way investment committees, are chaired by volunteers who take an active, leadership role in oversight and fund allocation decisions.
Basic Subsistence/Supportive Services Cluster
Martha Kutik has worked with seniors in a professional capacity for many years and currently is the CEO of Jennings Center for Older Adults in Garfield Heights. This has given her the background, knowledge and insight to help her make funding decisions as the volunteer Vice-Chair of the Basic Subsistence/Supportive Services Cluster of the Senior Success Investment Committee.
"As a donor and a manager of United Way campaigns in nursing homes for many years, it was important to know that the resources we raise for United Way are well spent. I can tell you after having been involved with the allocation process for the past two years that the resources United Way distributes are done in a way that change lives in an efficient and effective manner," Ms. Kutik says. "In particular, I am impressed by the impact many smaller programs have and the role United Way plays in supporting them. Without United Way, many of these agencies could not raise the money needed to survive, to undertake the important work they do. "
Two of the programs administered under this cluster are the home health care programs of the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) and the adult protective services program managed by a smaller agency, Adult Guardianship Services (AGS). VNA provides health care services for seniors in their homes, allowing them to remain independent longer. AGS assists those who can no longer manage their own affairs, making sure their best interests are looked after. These are just two of the many critical programs administered by nonprofit United Way partner agencies and funded through your generous contributions to United Way.
