    How United Way Cares
How United Way Investment Clusters are Organized, Fourth in a Series: Learning and Earning

The common mission of the programs under the Learning and Earning Investment Committee is that they are all meant to enhance success of Greater Clevelanders in the workplace and increase the lifelong learning by individuals in our community.

The economic vitality of our region is dependent on an educated, flexible workforce and educational achievement is a precursor to and very strong predictor of success in life, work, health and family stability. The Learning and Earning investment committee is dedicated to providing programs that give individuals of all ages an opportunity to learn new skills.

Each investment committee is composed of clusters of programs and the Learning and Earning Committee is no exception. The three clusters that compose the Learning and Earning Committee are: Early Learning, Employment and Education. Each cluster focuses on programs administered by different United Way agencies with a focus on their respective missions. The Learning and Earning Investment Committee and its clusters, like all United Way investment committees are chaired by volunteers who take an active role in oversight and fund allocation decisions.

    Education Cluster
Among the many activities Jim Petsock of UPS has undertaken with United Way over the past decade, being part of the resource allocation process has been the most rewarding. As chair of the Learning and Earning Investment Committee Education Cluster, Mr. Petsock has seen the funds he has helped raise go to work in the community, making a difference in the lives of people.

"It is important to grow our community and to create an educated workforce. It must be a priority for us to make everyone an asset to the community" says Mr. Petsock. United Way funds ten different agencies and 10 programs through the education cluster which Mr. Petsock oversees including programs that offer tutorial services, literacy instruction, money management, parenting education, adult basic education and more.

Mr. Petsock is Employee Relations Manager at UPS and he has seen how important education is to workplace success. "I have seen the outcomes from programs United Way funds, where people have gained that educational advantage which is so critical for a fulfilling and successful career." An example of that is Project: LEARN, which enables adults and older youth to learn basic literacy skills. "Project: LEARN teaches people to read, to get their GED and obtain skills that will help them get and keep a job. These programs have impact and I know they work," Mr. Petsock says.

Mr. Petsock and his committee provide oversight for programs to make sure the agencies spend resources the way they said they would and reach the goals they set out to achieve. "United Way helps the agencies remain accountable and makes sure they are keeping up with the times. Like a good business, United Way expects results from investments in programs. The return for United Way, however is not in profits to shareholders but in the impact the investment has in changing the lives of people for the better. We see that everyday with what I do here for United Way" Mr. Petsock says.
