How United Way Cares
How United Way Investment Clusters are Organized, Third in a Series
Each investment committee is targeted towards helping solve specific, difficult problems our community faces. Each overarching category, in this case Health and Caring for All, has particular initiatives bundled into different clusters. The three Health and Caring for All clusters are Health and Medical Family Support; Rehabilitation and Specialized Treatment; and Substance Abuse. More than 4,000 people received intensive assistance in managing a substance abuse problem last year through United Way funded programs.
Substance Abuse Programs
Many volunteers that make investment recommendations for United Way are individuals who have worked in the field of health and human services they are assessing. "For me, having worked as a law enforcement officer for the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program, plus years of professional development has made me aware of what it takes to run agencies and the programs they offer effectively and efficiently," says Julie M. Johnson, the Vice Chair of the Substance Abuse cluster. Professionally, Julie is currently the Executive Director of Community Challenge, an organization on Cleveland's west side that is dedicated to keeping children healthy.
Having first been introduced to United Way through a community leadership organization called Bridge Builders, Julie's admiration for the work United Way does has only increased as she has become more involved in the substance abuse resource allocation process. There are eight substance abuse programs that United Way supports, each one providing a specialized area of treatment. For example, New Directions, located in Eastern Cuyahoga County provides treatment for adolescents who are chemically dependent. "New Directions is the only adolescent residential treatment center in the area and there is such a demand for their services...there is always a waiting list for their services. New Directions is an example of a great United Way partner agency that makes a real difference in peoples' lives," Julie says.
Among the programs that are offered by United Way substance abuse partner agencies are those that provide education and prevention programs; comprehensive outpatient treatment and assessment; residential substance abuse treatment programs and other specialized treatment services. Substance abuse and the eight programs supported by United Way is just one of three clusters under the "Health and Caring For All" investment committee. Overall, over four million dollars was allocated last year by United Way by this investment committee, which supported 33 programs impacting the lives of over 190,000 people.
