How United Way Cares
How United Way Investment Clusters are Organized, First in a Series
The number and variety of programs that United Way of Greater Cleveland supports is large and organizing them is important to understanding the impact these programs have in helping Greater Clevelanders in need.
United Way "categories of caring" are organized into five clusters: Helping Children Succeed; Employment through Education; Health and Caring for All; Senior Care and Community Capacity Building. What ties these different clusters together is that they are all geared towards providing programs that have an impact on the quality of life of Greater Clevelanders.
Within each investment cluster are sub-categories of caring. For example in the cluster of Helping Children Succeed there are the four sub-categories: Youth Development; Child and Family Services; Basic Needs and Mental Health Counseling. In the sub-category of Mental Health Counseling alone, United Way funds 22 programs, such as Early Intervention for Mental Illness and Sexual Assault Counseling. United Way's role is to help Greater Clevelanders when confronting particular problems, as thousands of our friends, neighbors and community members do every day.
United Way volunteers have allocated over $9 million this year to help Greater Cleveland's families help their children succeed. Funding is just one aspect of the support United Way provides to programs and partner agencies. United Way also provides business services such as group health insurance, liability insurance, accounting, training, mentoring and marketing.
United Way spearheads innovation in nonprofit/health and human services management and is a leading convener of both in our community. Examples of that leadership are the Community Vision Council, Youth Pages, 211/First Call For Help and Core Service Planning, which we will explain in detail in future issues of the eNewsletter. Efficiency, innovation and impact are all hallmarks of your United Way.
